Nouns are naming words. Everything we see or are able to talk about is represented by a word which names it - that word is called a 'noun'.
A noun is a part of speech that is used to name a person, place, thing, quality, or action.

Generally, the purpose of a sentence is to provide information about or give instructions to a person, animal, place or thing.
The word or words used in the sentence that refer to the name of the person, animal, place or thing are known as Noun. It is probably the most widely used part of speech.

  1. Proper Noun is the name of a particular person or place. Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
    English, French, Italian, Sita, Rajesh, Delhi, Kanpur,Coach, Pepsi, Lucky, Christmas, New Year’s Day etc.
    Example : Every man was dressed in uniform but James was by far the most dashing.
    Man is common noun
    James is proper noun
  2. Common Noun Common Noun is a name given in common to every person or thing of the group. Common nouns begin with a capital letter only if it is the first word of the sentence. Girl, Boy, City, Tiger,Man, Women, Book, Pencil, IPad, Computer etc.
    Example : 1. Each state may have varying laws.
    2. The movie was interrupted by the babies crying in the back row.
  3. Collective Noun are those nouns that denote a group of people, animals, objects, concepts or ideas as a single entity.
    Army of Soldiers, Class of Students, Crew of Sailors, Band of Musicians, A staff of employees, A flock of tourists, A board of directors, A tribe of natives, A team of players etc.
  4. Abstract Noun Abstract Noun is the name of a quality, action or state. You cannot see, hear, smell or taste an abstract noun.
    Kindness, Loyalty, Childhood, Sickness, Laughter, Fear etc.
    Example :I fear the night. (In this sentence, fear shows action so it’s a verb.)
    The night was shrouded in fear. (In this sentence, fear is an abstract noun because you can’t physically touch, feel, hear, taste, smell, or see it.)
