Synonyms are words with the same or similar meanings. Words that are synonyms are said to be synonymous, and the state of being a synonym is called synonymy. All words can have a synonym. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions can have a synonym as long as both words are the same part of speech.

एक समान वाले शब्द को समानार्थी शब्द कहा जाता है. शब्द जिसका पर्याय है उसे पर्यायवाची शब्द और समानार्थी शब्द कहा जाता है. सभी शब्दों का एक समानार्थी शब्द हो सकता है. दोनों शब्दों के शब्द के भेद के रूप में संज्ञा, सर्वनाम, विशेषण, क्रिया विशेषण और सम्बन्ध सूचक शब्द के समानार्थी शब्द हो सकते है.
